Contest Grading - 6th May, Kingsley Hall, Dagenham Submitted: 9/5/06
Published: 9/5/06 Authors: Sensei Adam Contest Grading, Kingsley Hall, Dagenham 2006 Our least favourite venue, highlighted by the extraordinarily low turn-out. However, three Squad members had reasons to attend this grading. With the support outnumbering the competitors, Hannah Bowles was after her 18th Mon, still only 13 years old. Bexs Haylett - 16 in October - striving to attend as many gradings as possible to get that junior grade as high as she can. And finally, the one senior on the day, Andreas Killi, determined to put right his dissapointing results from his last gradings. Rebecca Haylett Bexs up first. First bout against a slightly smaller girl, who looked as if she had been around judo for quite a while. Many attacks from the two girls, but ended up with Bexs' strength and her opponents speed counter-acting each other. Bexs did land on her back at one point early on, but some confusion regarding this as the ref had a quick word with his colleague on the side of the mat. The fight continued without any explanation - so I'm assuming it was the lack of intent that saved Bexs. Either way, eventually the fight ended as Hike-Wake (draw). Second bout, this time against an opponent slightly larger and also higher grade - 11th Mon compared with Bexs' 7th Mon. Again, the fight ended with Hike Wake, but Bexs was all over her, the only one making any meaningful attacks, and unlucky not to hold down the girl on several occassions. There is no doubt in my mind that Bexs would have won unanimously if the fight went to a decision - but at a grading; Hike Wake. Eventually, Bexs was awarded 8th Mon - massive congratulations, but leaving us all a little surprised that it wasn't higher considering the calibre of opposition. That said, at a grading you have to win. Hannah Bowles Arguably, the star of the day with the achievement at only 13 years old outsurpassing any other junior in the history of Kamiko Judo Clubs, and indeed any still under the umbrella of Akitas Judo Clubs. Her first fight was a difficult tussle against an experienced competitor. Hannah coming out slightly on top (and I'm saying that without bias - hopefully!) with more attacks. Nothing lighting the world alight and ending with Hike Wake. Second bout up against a low grade that was a lot heavier than Hannah. We were all surprised that these to were out against each other, but guessed in hindsight that Hannah had done enough in her first fight. No messing about; Hannah quickly threw with a soft O Soto Gari and held her opponent down in Kesa Gatame for 25 seconds. Ippon. Andreas Killi Andreas up last. Again, his opponents all older than him, and looking stronger. This did not faze him at all, however, and straight into his first bout. We all had a giggle as his opponent started to strangle Andreas; with Andreas' neck there was little chance that anything would happen. The next time the two ended up on the ground, Andreas took hold of a strong Mune Gatame. With support for the other fellow shouting for their idle to drag himself out of the area rather than get up (would this have mattered at a grading anyway, one wonders?); Andreas suddenly jumped up with concern for his opponent - who looked bewildered that Andreas had let go. Matte. All of us assuming that the cheat had tapped up, later to be confirmed when he was overheard chatting to his fans. Seconds later Andreas had the man down again and didn't let go this time for an Ippon. Excellent win, and a shame that his opponent soured the judo with dirty tricks.
Second fight didn't last too long - Andreas turning into a Hiza Guruma and throwing his opponent, causing us to uproar. In truth, his opponent may have turned out slightly, but the technique was awarded Ippon, and a beautiful technique it was too. |
