Yoko Gake

Yoko-gake - Side Hook

Yoko-gake is very much a sacrifice or sutemi version of ko-soto-gake, or perhaps even harai-tsuri-komi-ashi or okuri-ashi-barai depending on the execution of the technique.

Stepping to the side of uke, tori hooks the nearest leg and lifts - but, to force the technique further, the arms pull the uke to the floor as tori throws themselves (and in doing so uke) towards the floor. It is important that tori's foot remains behind ukes ankle, so that it doesn't look like uke executed the throw - to aid in this tori should try and stay to their side. Due to the sutemi application of this technique and the lack of support to uke, this can be quite a devastating technique.

Yoko-gake features in Nage-no-kata.
